Happy Thanksgiving! And a Giveaway!

There are so many things I’m thankful for this year, and one of them is the beauty and blogger community! It’s been such a fun and supportive group.

I actually met my friend Jessica through the beauty community and we teamed up to host a giveaway on Instagram! Everyone deserves some pampering during the crazy, lovely, sometimes stressful holiday season, so hopefully these products do just the trick!

They include some of our favorites, like Bliss and Patchology Masks, a sugar slushie, and this delicious smelling candle. I also added a few La Mer and Jo Malone minis, which just scream luxurious pampering. The total value is over $225 dollars!

I hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Clio Palmperfect Cordless Shaver (and my Self Tanning Routine)

A convenient beauty tool

Have you ever been wearing a skirt and crossed your legs in a meeting and then realized you did a terrible job shaving your knees? Just me? On more than one occasion, I’ve wished I had a razor with me for a quick fix. So I was pretty excited when Clio reached out about their Palmperfect Cordless Shaver.

I like the smaller size compared to most electric razors and how quickly this takes care of any unwanted hair. I think it’s especially great for the underarms as the rounded top is perfect for this more delicate area. I love that you don’t need water or shaving cream either, so you can quickly take care of shaving anywhere.

This is going to be perfect for beach trips or warm-weather travel! Or even when I’m wearing a sleeveless blouse to the office. At under $10, this such an affordable tool to have on hand – I definitely recommend it.

I also tried self tanning for the first time (review coming next week!) and the Palmperfect has been working like a charm to prep my skin. I can easily shave my legs and underarms without nicks or having to hop in the shower.

If I am doing my nighttime, post-workout shower routine, I’ll also use a body scrub to help exfoliate and make sure my skin is smooth first. My favorites are the Josie Maran Argan Sugar Scrub and the Sol de Janeiro Bod Buff! Then I’ll mix the Isle of Paradise Self Tanning Drops into one of my favorite body lotions and apply all over. I’m sadly almost finished with the Soap and Glory Smoothie Star Body Milk, which smells amazing and hydrates without being heavy.

Have you ever tried an electric razor before? What’s your favorite self tanner? I’m hooked on both now!

Dermstore June BeautyFIX Unboxing and Review

New monthly unboxing!

IMG_5566

I’ve been subscribed to Dermstore’s BeautyFIX box for three months now and it’s become my very favorite subscription box! That’s a big deal for me because I’ve been subscribed to Birchbox for over five years. BeautyFIX is more skincare focused, although it usually includes makeup, haircare, fragrance, and body care in every box as well. I love the variety and that full size products are included too – it’s a great value to me. It’s been fun to experience new-to-me brands and have a stash of samples for all of my recent trips.

The June box arrived just before I left for Florida – which was perfect because it has two sunscreens. I’ve committed to using only reef-safe options (more on that here!), so I’m thrilled that these are both mineral formulas.

The first is the Color Science Sunforgettable Broad Spectrum SPF 50. I love the idea of an SPF powder for easy reapplication throughout the day, but I couldn’t really tell how much I was applying. Even though this is shade Medium, it was pretty undetectable on my light skin tone. It did take down the shine in my t-zone during a hot day at Disney thankfully. Overall, it’s portable and convenient and I’m definitely going to use it for the rest of the summer, but I wouldn’t buy it for $57.

The other is from Nia 24 and is a Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Lotion. I could definitely tell where I applied this one, unlike the powder, as it’s super white. Zinc and Titanium Dioxide tend to be, so it doesn’t really bother me, and thankfully this formula blends in nicely without tugging at the skin. It’s also not too drying – I used a moisturizer (VMV Hypoallergenics from last month!) beforehand. I also appreciate the inclusion of Niacinamide, which is a great anti-aging ingredient.

Lastly for facial skincare is the Dermologica Biolumin-C Serum. I see tons of rave reviews on Instagram and I’ve been wanting to try this brand, so I’m really happy it was included in June’s box. I’m not opening this just yet because I’m still testing the Skinceuticals Discoloration Defense Serum from last month that is supposed to brighten as well. That was another brand I had been wanting to try, so BeautyFIX has really impressed me.

For body care, I was excited to see a product from Sol de Janiero since I love their Bod Buff Scrub. This is the ever popular Bum Bum Cream. I had first tried this a couple years ago and found it way too shimmery for my taste. It smells delicious though, so I tried it again and I’m happy to report that it makes my dry, pale legs look a bit more healthy and hydrated. You still can see the shimmer particles unfortunately, but you can’t feel them at all! I could never use something that felt remotely like rubbing glitter onto my skin… If you haven’t smelled their line at least, I would recommend it!

Another one for the body is The Cool Fix Target Gel Lotion. This lightweight, blue gel is supposed to help with ingrown hairs, razor burn, bumps, and redness. I don’t deal with those too often thankfully, but I’ll be sure to have Reed try it and maybe I will need it sometime this summer. I think it’s a unique item that is nice to have on hand.

The haircare item this month is from one of my favorite brands, Alterna. I absolutely love their Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner as well as their Ocean Waves Spray. This Anti-Frizz Blowout Butter is supposed to give medium to thick hair a smoother, easier blowout. I never use a blow dryer on my hair – I actually don’t even own one – since it’s curly and air dries best. My hair is also pretty fine. This smells so good (like all of their products), so I am tempted to try it, but I may keep this for a giveaway.

Next we have the fragrance from Juliette has a Gun. It’s called Moscow Mule and has notes of lime, bergamot, and sandalwood. I like the original scent from this line, Not a Perfume, which I tried through Birchbox years ago. It’s light but pretty. I’m saving this new one for my mom since she loves trying out different perfumes.

Lastly, I completely forgot to photograph the Jane Iredale Lip Drink Lip Balm because I had taken it out of the box right away to try it on! I received the shade Flirt, a pretty, subtle pink. I enjoy the SPF 15 and lemony scent, but it’s definitely not the most hydrating lip balm I’ve ever tried.

Box Breakdown:

  • Powder Sunscreen (full size) .21 oz = $57
  • Mineral SPF 30 Lotion (full size) 2.7 oz = $49
  • Vitamin C Serum .10 oz = $8.70
  • Body Cream 1 oz = $4.50
  • Razor Gel 1 oz = $6
  • Hair Cream .85 oz = $5.78
  • Fragrance .06 oz = $3.35
  • Lip balm .05 oz = $6.07

For $27 (with tax), I received $140.40 of product!! This is such a good deal and I love the variety of categories included. Plus I got to discover new brands and I’m stocked on reef-safe sunscreen for this season. I’m really excited for next month now!

New Skincare Reviews: Raw Elements, Boscia, Burt’s Bees

Three recent purchases/gifts

My newest skincare find is the Boscia Cactus Water Hydrating Cream. Influenster sent this over to try and review. I love the happy green packaging and sanitary spoon. Unfortunately, this didn’t get along with my skin. It’s definitely more of a lightweight gel than cream in my opinion. It also remained tacky to the point where my skin felt sticky several minutes later.

If I used this at night, my skin felt dry to the touch the next morning. However, when I washed my face, it felt like a thick layer of something slimy was coming off. My skin was really dry this past winter and it’s currently becoming combination skin as the season is changing. This is geared toward combination to oily skin, so it’s probably not moisturizing enough for me right now. I might try it again in July or August, but I wouldn’t recommend this from my recent experience.

I’ve also been testing the Raw Elements Tinted Facial Moisturizer SPF 30 for a couple weeks now. I thankfully received this through the OBL Club (which is free for anyone to join). Andrea is so sweet and her blog is a lovely resource for clean beauty reviews, tips, and news.

I have been looking for a sunscreen that doesn’t contain avobenzene or octinoxate, which damage coral reefs and marine life. I generally prefer mineral sunscreens anyway and am vowing to only use Reef Safe options going forward. On that topic, I was thrilled when Hawaii passed their new law banning chemical spf!

IMG_5498

I think this is a great moisturizing sunscreen. The tint is a tiny bit dark for my pretty fair skin tone, but since this blends well and has sheer coverage, it works. It does have a very glowy finish – I don’t mind it on its own for casual wear. If I’m doing my makeup with concealer, blush, etc., I definitely set it down with powder.

The jar packaging isn’t my favorite because I don’t like dipping my fingers into products (I think this would be especially gross at the beach with sandy fingers), but there’s a stick version too. I’ve been applying it with a sponge to be a little more hygienic. It retails for $17.99, which I think is reasonable for a product that is reef safe and cruelty-free, has natural ingredients, and will last the whole summer since a little bit goes a long way.

Lastly, I picked up this Burt’s Bees lip scrub in my recent Target Haul. I needed one in a pinch and as I’ve been using this more, I really like it. It has an oily (in a good way!), balm-like base that hydrates after you wash the exfoliating crystals away. It also smells amazing. I think I would love this even more in the winter because my lips are super dry then. If you’re looking for a really rough, granular scrub, this probably isn’t the one.

Have you tried any of these items? What’s your favorite Reef Safe sunscreen? I’m definitely on the lookout for more!

Drugstore Dud or Delight: Maybelline Total Temptation Mascara

Two in one Dud or Delight this month!

It seems like everyone has been raving about the newer Maybelline Total Temptation Mascara. This is supposed to be volumizing yet fluffy so your lashes are soft instead of crunchy. I love mascara, especially volumizing ones, so I had to pick this up! I also grabbed a single shadow since it was like $4 and I haven’t tried a Maybelline single in a long time. I think they were reformulated since then too.

Here’s what the brush looks like. It’s a natural bristle brush – my favorite – that’s not too dense and tapers very slightly. The bristles are long enough that they can comb through my lashes without touching my eyelids and smearing mascara on my shadow.

This creates natural looking volume in my experience with a good bit of length. I love wearing this for work as it’s defining without being too dramatic. It also doesn’t flake or smudge (which I can’t tolerate with mascara).

I think it’s harder to remove at the end of the night than my holy grail, Clinique High Impact, but easier than Benefit RollerLash (second fave if it were easier to remove!). I prefer to use a really great face wash instead of oil-based makeup removers though.

I also have the Maybelline Expert Wear Eyeshadow in shade 105, Soft Pearl. True to the name, it definitely has a whiter base versus champagne or anything warm-toned. It’s a pretty shimmer that’s not chunky or glittery at all. I think it’s a tiny bit dry, but it’s a good formula for under $4.

I only make space in my makeup bag for single shadows if they’re really incredible, so this one didn’t make the cut unfortunately. I much prefer my Colourpop singles, especially Drift, which is the most gorgeous satin burgundy shade. However, I’ve been reaching for the mascara a ton! It’s a pretty, more natural look for me.

Have you guys tried either of these?? What did you think?
