A quick outfit in snowy Chicago
It was -2* in Chicago earlier this week and about 5* when my mom quickly snapped this photo. I love being home, but I forgot how cold it can be! Thankfully, I received a few gifts to fight the freezing weather this year.
This vest is so comfortable and warm – I’ve even been wearing it around the house. I like that it doesn’t add too much bulk, so I can layer a jacket over it. I also love the floral print which has white, subtle pink, and blue colors.
I’ve been obsessed with these chenille fingerless gloves since Thanksgiving, so I was really happy to find the pink pair under the tree this year. I also received the scarf and matching beanie. I love them all! They’re so cozy and cute.
How do you stay warm in crazy cold temps?
Feeling festive, staying warm
This Calvin Klein coat is one of my favorites because it’s pretty warm, but I think it looks cuter than a puffy jacket over a dressier outfit. I love the toggle closures and wrap belt, which pulls in my waist and helps keep out the wind. The faux fur hood is also removable. Here are a few similar black coats with faux fur and toggles (my favorite!), the wrap belt, or a zipper.
The ruffles on this top are so sweet, but the sheer yoke and sleeves add a little drama that’s perfect for a holiday party. I think it’s so cute tucked into a little suede mini skirt, but it would pair nicely with velvet pants as well. I love this blush pink pair and these green ones are fun too.
A tiny clutch is my go-to accessory for holiday parties. I love the velvet fabric and pretty clasp on this vintage clutch. It just barely fits my phone without the case and maybe a lipstick and credit card. This rounded box clutch from Etsy is really similar to mine and this velvet Kate Spade pouch is currently on sale. Here’s one from ASOS that has a lot more room – I love the ring detail too.
Happy Holidays to you and yours!! Do you have any fun plans for the weekend?
A snowy #ootd and winter favorites
It’s snowed twice this week in New York and I’m actually okay with the wintery weather considering how mild it’s been lately. I’ve also been accumulating winter gear to fight my constant coldness, so here are some of my favorite items.
If I look somewhat comfortable sitting in snow in the middle of winter, it’s all thanks to this Eddie Bauer coat. It was a gift from Reed and I love it – I’m always cold and this jacket keeps me warm even on 20 degree days. There are so many thoughtful details as well, like fuzzy cuffs and lined pockets, a double zipper, removable hood, chest pocket for easy access, and the longer length. If you’re looking for a high-quality winter parka, I think this one checks all the boxes.
My mom gave me these adorable Chenille Fingerless Gloves at Thanksgiving and they’ve been so useful! They keep my hands warm but I can still text, quickly snap a photo, or easily get out my metrocard. Normal gloves are generally too long for my fingers and end up being awkward and bulky on me, so I absolutely love these. They’re also super soft and trendy because chenille is really popular this winter.
Lastly, these Sorel boots have been just as great for snowy days here in the city as they are for trekking on a ski trip in Vermont. They’re warm, comfortable, and stable on slippery sidewalks. I also think they’re pretty cute for snow boots. Mine are last year’s Quarry Gray version, but I’ve linked to this year’s updated pair in the same colorway.
I’d love to hear about your favorite winter items or tips on staying warm below!
An #ootd and background story
I’m obsessed with anything cozy and versatile, so this wrap has been a go-to recently. It can be worn as a blanket scarf or poncho that buttons in front and the charcoal gray color goes with almost everything. This ribbed one was from Uniqlo last year, but similar options include this splurge-worthy Eileen Fisher Poncho and this adorable cowl neck from Steve Madden (only $36!). I also love this gorgeous red one as well.
This Uniqlo Heat Tech Tee is a lifesaver in the colder months, especially because I’m always chilly. It layers easily, fits like a glove, and comes in several colors. These tees are also only $15 and the fabric is soft and stretchy (as demonstrated by my freezing fingers in the first photo!). I’m definitely going to pick up a couple more before my ski trip in January. I’m also wearing my favorite Loft jeans that are the perfect medium blue and a great length to wear with ankle booties. Speaking of boots…
Last weekend, I went rock climbing for maybe the third time ever. I was trying to get to the top of the wall on a route that was just outside my range and my arms were exhausted after an hour of climbing.
I’ll admit that I’m incredibly competitive, even if it’s with myself, so I had to conquer that climb and only had a minute to do so because the gym was closing. I was at the final handle with my left hand and just needed to touch it with my right to finish. I went for it.
And fell. I fell hard and fast and wasn’t ready for it at all. I didn’t roll onto my back – I just crumpled. I knew right away that something was wrong and the next day got x-rays to confirm. Thankfully, it’s just a bad sprain and I’m only on crutches for a couple of weeks.
It’s the second time this Fall that I’m having trouble walking and I actually needed a wheelchair at the airport over Thanksgiving. It’s incredibly frustrating not being able to make dinner or even shower standing up. I’m extremely independent, so having to rely on others and ask for help doing simple things has been a challenge.
At first I was mad at my body for not being strong enough to make the catch on the wall in the first place. But after dealing with my fifth floor walk up and getting around NYC, I’m trying not to be so hard on myself. I’ve realized that our bodies are pretty incredible and I won’t take simply walking for granted ever again.
A casual look featuring my new favorite jeans
I recently picked up these jeans at LOFT and can’t stop wearing them. I especially love the button fly – out of all of my jeans, this detail makes this pair unique. They’re also the perfect medium blue with an undone hem for a casual, cool vide. This coatigan is also a LOFT find and I love the thicker fabric, pockets, and striped inside. If you sense a theme with the #loftgirl status, I used to work there back in the day and still shop there because of the extensive petite section. Finding the perfect jeans when you’re 5’2″ can be a challenge, so LOFT has become my go-to for high-quality, affordable basics.
These Dolce Vita Tessey Boots are my most worn pair this fall. They’re incredibly comfortable and I’m obsessed with the charcoal gray color – they surprisingly go with everything, even warmer toned outfits. Dolce Vita is another favorite brand as their shoes are always stylish, true to size, and last for years.
I’m currently reading Paris, He Said by Christine Sneed. I usually fly through novels like this, but this book had a slow beginning. I’m at the part where Jayne and Laurent have just arrived in Paris, so I imagine it will be captivating soon enough.
That’s about it from me! Happy Weekend!
